James Joyce (1882-1941), a controversial writer who brought the stream of consciousness to its extremes aiming at achieving the complete impersonality of the author, thus portraying life as it really was, as objectively as possible. According to Joyce the artist had to be totally isolated from society in order to give life to the true inner being of the 20th century individual with all his or her alienation, inner solitude and inner turmoil.
